Patricia has transformed Agate Pond Preserve from overcrowded forests and irrigation ponds overrun with invasive species into a healthy, diverse habitat for birds, beavers, and other wildlife.

A LIFETIME OF STEWARDSHIP

I am thrilled to share the story of Patricia Otto and the land she has lovingly cared for over the past 40 years. Thanks to Patricia Otto, 100 acres of forestland and wetland that flow right into Lake Whatcom have been protected forever. In March, she signed the Agate Pond Preserve conservation easement with Whatcom Land Trust, ensuring that the land she has deeply cared for will be legally protected forever. Patricia has transformed Agate Pond Preserve from overcrowded forests and irrigation ponds overrun with invasive species into a healthy, diverse habitat for birds, beavers, and other wildlife. She has undertaken massive restoration efforts, including a culvert removal, reed canary grass removal, bird box installations, and so much more. The wetlands not only provide habitat for hundreds of species, but also clean and filter the water in Agate Creek before heading into Lake Whatcom. So not only does her work create vital habitat, but it also supports clean drinking water for over a hundred thousand people in Whatcom County.
